Zaycon Foods Chicken Breast Review
Zaycon Foods offered to let us pick up cases of their farm-fresh chicken breasts, to review and tell you about.
This isn’t something you can find in your local grocery store. But, that’s part of why it’s so good! Zaycon Foods has a unique and really smart business model. They buy in bulk, directly from the farm. They have events scheduled all over the country, which are listed on their website ZayconFoods.com, You select which product you’d like, then sign up to pick it up at a specified location, at a specified date and time. Their products are sold in bulk. For example, their boneless, skinless chicken breast comes in a 40 lb box (shown below). There are 4 bags in each box, containing 10 lbs of fresh, never-frozen chicken. Unless you’re having a block party barbecue, you’ll want to plan to have a few hours to package the chicken to freeze.
PROCESSING Packing up the chicken is pretty simple. It comes in a whole breast piece, not like you’d get from the store. I start by cutting it into two separate breasts. Some of the pieces are so thick, I first filet them by cutting them in half the long way. Then, depending on the size of the pieces, I cut them into either 3 or 4 separate chunks. Each whole breast is enough to make 12 – 16 single servings! Check out my video showing how to cut the whole breast into pieces.
Then, I use my Foodsaver and rolls of Foodsaver bags to make freezer bags in just the right size to store one meal for my family of three. Typically I include 3-4 pieces per bag. Then I use Foodsaver to remove the excess air and seal the bag shut. I write the contents and date on the bag with a marker, and put it in the freezer.
TASTE I’m not sure how to explain how this boneless, skinless chicken breast tastes. This chicken is not like what you buy at your local store. I can’t even explain how fresh it is!! The taste is phenomenal. There isn’t a subtle difference – there is a HUGE difference from what you buy at a supermarket. We were savoring every bite. It tastes substantially better than frozen chicken you buy at a grocery store that has probably sat for months (or longer?!) in the freezer, losing taste and texture and who knows what. I’m not a food critic, but I know that this tastes a hundred times better than that.
Back to that dreaded freezer. I have 40 lbs. of chicken, so I have to freeze some, right? But then it’ll be frozen and not fresh, right?! Well, it’s been 3 weeks since I picked up the chicken. I froze it that night after cutting it and using my Foodsaver to vacuum seal into family-size portions. It still tastes incredibly fresh even after thawing!! Still way better than anything I can buy at a store.
PRICE Their price is comparable to cheap chicken you’ll find in the store. You can probably find it even cheaper, it’s true. But, to get the quality and taste, you’d be paying 10 times what they charge. I am always on the hunt for super low-priced chicken breast. But, in my experience the quality of cheap meat (and sometimes the store conditions) make it not worth any savings. Especially if we won’t even eat it! It’s so awesome that their prices are so low. It means everyone can do this!
Zaycon Foods keeps overhead costs down because they don’t have retail stores. They’re able to cover each location with just a few people. They buy wholesale and only get what they need, so there’s no waste. Bulk buying power means lower prices. It isn’t packaged individually, it’s sold in bulk which keeps the cost of packaging and processing down. And, they sell it right away, meaning they don’t have to pay to store it or keep it frozen, so that’s more savings. All of this not only equals low cost, it equals super fresh, super tasty product.
Disclaimer: Zaycon provided credit to me so that I could pick up a box of their chicken and sample it. And, they’re sponsoring this giveaway. I was not required to write a review or host a giveaway, and doing so did not affect my opinion in any way. My words and opinions are my own.
